| 内容記述 | 本稿は，夏目漱石の初期の代表的な小説『吾輩は猫である』（1905-06 年）と『坊っちゃん』（1906年）を取り上げ，都市中間層の家庭における女中像について考察したものである。いずれの小説でも，〈女中〉ではなく〈下女〉という言葉が使われている。 『吾輩は猫である』に登場する下女・おさんは，無知で乱暴な人種として描かれている。いっぽう，『坊っちゃん』にみる下女・清は，主人を盲愛する忠実な奉公人である。両者は対称的に見えるが，ともに当時の典型的な女中像であり，「無知・無教養な存在」という点では共通している。また，雇主はいずれも，裕福とはいえない俸給生活者であることから，新中間層の家庭において女中の雇用が状態化しつつあることが浮き彫りになった。 |

| 内容記述 | This paper examines the image of domestic help among the urban middle class as seen in two typical novels of Natsume Soseki’s early period, I am a Cat (1905-06) and Botchan (1906). The term used in both of these works is gejo (maidservant), not jochu (domestic help). Osan, the maidservant who appears in I am a Cat, is depicted as an unthinking, violent type. In contrast, Kiyo, the maidservant seen in Botchan, is depicted as a faithful servant who loved her master blindly. While at first glance these appear to be contrasting depictions, each is a typical example of the image of domestic help at that time. Another commonality between these two works is the fact that in each case the maidservant’s employer, although highly educated, lives a life of a white-collar worker that could hardly be described as wealthy. |
