“ね” の機能について、筆者の長男Y児と次男W児の縦断的で質的なデータと大学生への実験による量的調査から検討した。明らかとなったのは次の4点である。\n⑴ Y 児の場合は1歳6ヵ月5日に、W児の場合は1歳8ヵ月6日にどの助詞よりも早く終助詞\n“ね” が出現している。Y児の場合は発話の連鎖を作る機能として、W児の場合は共感を表す機能を担って出現した。\n⑵ “ね” の基本的な機能は会話の連鎖を作ることにある。ことばはまず発話として出現する。音声によるコミュニケーションであるおしゃべり機能が基本と言える。そうした時、終助詞 “ね” は文の終わりとしてより先に発話の終わりあるいは会話の連鎖のターンテーキングの役割を担うものと言える。\n⑶ 最初に現れる終助詞 “ね” は、コードの共有ではなく、感情の共有を示していると思われる。他者を想定しているのであるが、自己と他者が分化しつつも、場面に溶け込んだ（癒合的な）文脈の中で生じている。\n⑷ 終助詞 “ね” は、大人が乳児に話しかける際のマザリーズの機能も担っている。大人が乳幼児に話しかけるとき終助詞 “ね” を多発することが乳幼児にとって “ね”の獲得が容易であり早く獲得すること、そして誤用があらわれないことにつながっていると思われる。\n終助詞は典型的に会話に現れる形式である。会話の連鎖がコミュニケーションの基本構造であることを考えるとき、終助詞 “ね”
