The paper provides a reflective account of the author’s changing contexts of instruction and its influence on both his teaching goals and instructional approach. The first part of this paper the author provides a brief introduction to the issues of ideology in second language instruction. Next, the author provides an account of his experience as an English writing instructor in Japan, which involves multiple contexts, differing curriculum goals, and several constraints. Then, the author provides arguments regarding the three main ideological approaches to teaching L2 writing, including critical pedagogy, accomodationist pragmatic, and critical pragmatic.
