The novel’s protagonist is a daily domestic maid registered with a domestic maid agency. The story advances by peeking, through her eyes, into the inner workings of an upper middle-class household. This work depicts the way the domestic maid is exploited like a machine, with no regard for her personality. From the employer’s perspective, the domestic maid is an outsider, and no warm relations develop between the employer and the maid as had existed with the livein maids of the past. At the time, a movement was apparent in Japan to position domestic maids as housework technicians, as a countermeasure against a shortage of maids.
