Research has focused on the individual learning process and mutual support in the workplace. However, to help ensure the adaptation of researchers and the support of their surroundings, studies need to elucidate the mutual adaptation process between the individual and the surroundings. Therefore, in this study, qualitative data were collected from 18 expatriate researchers and analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. A total of 47 concepts were generated, and the core category “environment of capabilities” emerged. Depending on how researchers consider the workplace to be a place to demonstrate their abilities (suppression/development/exertion), the approach to (supported/supported/strategy) and from their surroundings (cross-border power) changed.
