Keiribu no Moriwaka-san (“We cannot pay you for this: Ms. Moriwaka of Accounting Department”) novel series from a gender perspective. Set in an old-fashioned soap manufacturer, the novels feature a number of women working in the back office, including the main character Ms. Moriwaka. It depicts their daily lives \nin the workplace, and speech and behavior related to gender bias appears occasionally. This paper considers three episodes from the novel series, elucidating their backgrounds and related issues. Gender bias in the workplace is unconscious and may be expressed in one’s words and behavior without even noticing it. Speech and behavior that appears at first glance to be friendly and sympathetic could be hurtful to others and weaken their job motivation.
